My least favourite weather is rain...it makes me want to curl up and sit inside with a hot drink and a good book. Unfortunately, that is not very often possible - it always seems to be pouring with rain at school drop-off and pick-up times! Am I wrong? It is hard enough getting my boys to wear something even slightly rainproof on these occasions, but I have to admit it can be tricky finding a coat which is waterproof-ish, warm, and stylish for myself too.
Here is a round-up of my favourite waterproofs, which shouldn't make you feel frumpy or want to stay home... I have a few things which have to be included to make the cut: hood (who has enough hands for an umbrella? unfortunately this rules out the majority of Macs for me), pockets, not too rustly (technical term), removable lining preferable...
I have owned this mac for a few seasons now, and I can totally vouch for it's waterproof qualities. The hood is pretty unobtrusive on days when you don't need it, and the fabric is soft to the touch (no rustle factor here!). The only negative is that it is unlined and so not as great in the middle of winter. I especially love this coat in the black also. Seasalt have quite a large range of waterproof coats...once you get past all the twee linings, there are a few fabulous ones. Plus the customer care if you call them is amazing! On to parkas...
There are so many parkas out there, making it difficult to choose these days. I think everyone needs a parka - it will become the item you always reach for once you hang it in your wardrobe. Choosing one in khaki makes it more on-trend and at the same time lifts all the black and grey we start wearing in the colder months! The top of the line versions, which are waterproof, are also heavily padded with down and feathers which means they are more for the colder months and can't be dragged out in the more rainy autumn months. If you are looking for one of these, my top picks would be this one from Canada Goose, or this one from Woolrich. But take a deep breath before you look at the price. This Madewell version, above, ticks all my boxes (despite only being able to order online so far - use code "HEYMADEWELL" for a 15% discount until October 15th...) I think it will be in my basket, as it is the only one close to having some real waterproof functionality. Other parkas on my list are:
But sometimes you just want a raincoat to throw on for a quick downpour? How about one of these?
I hope you can drag yourself out into the rain to try these for yourselves. Having a coat which actually keeps you dry is such a Godsend. Words cannot describe the difference it can make to your everyday routine! You may even sing in the rain?
